ZINE – Fucking Hell (2015)
—
Here is ZINE, an exhibition hosted in Japan which curates a selection of zines based on the theme of culture, produced by selected designers and creators in Asia. Invited to be part of the exhibition, Fucking Hell, was hence born out of collaboration between Asylum’s Creative Director and renowned photographer Yang Tan.
Urbanisation has slowly eroded Singapore’s traditional culture. As a tribute to the Chinese culture, Fucking Hell taps on Chinese mythology to explore the theme of death. The Ten Courts of Hell, a series of Chinese mythological dioramas at Haw Par Villa theme park, Singapore, guides the content, where artistically gruesome tortures are photographed, depicting how humans are punished for their sins after they die. In an attempt to replicate the ‘burning of Chinese joss paper’, an act of giving money to the dead, the zine has finishing touches of foil stamps and hand-burnt edges, accompanied with a burnt smell and disintegrated ash bits as one unravels the zine.
Fucking Hell targets the ones fascinated with art and culture, who take an interest in Chinese mythology and beliefs. This is a one-off zine issued in limited edition of 200 copies. Besides its exhibition in Japan, it is sold in independent bookstores in Singapore and Japan.
