Asylum’s approach to design is finding relevance and context within the parameters of each project. Our design ethos is centered on breaking new grounds and pushing the boundaries of creativity in its category.
The focus was set to preserve the history past and rich heritage of the building. While keeping the integrity of the architecture, we worked on creating a new language that will propel the hotel into the future as an exemplary hotel in the modern luxurious category. Having worked on the project from the start, it allowed us to design the brand’s identity and collateral rollout closely with its interior space.
Social spaces were carved out within the hotel, while aiming to contextualize it. Meanwhile, the utilitarian industrial touch of the hotel is being appropriated for a modern luxury hotel. We managed to successfully juxtapose two contrasting languages of historical industrial and modern luxury.
The design began with an exploration of the building’s history and heritage, allowing its past to shape the narrative of the hotel.
In the lobby, original brick walls and the dramatic double-volume space were preserved, while raw architectural elements, tropical planting and custom pulley lights reference the building’s industrial past. Natural light transforms the character of the space throughout the day, creating a distinctly different atmosphere
after dark.
Upstairs, the original pitched roofs and exposed trusses are celebrated, giving rise to guestrooms of varying layouts and individual character. Raw materials such as concrete and Corten steel reinforce the industrial language, balanced by thoughtful details designed for the well-travelled guest.
Throughout the hotel, collaborations with local designers, artists and craftsmen bring a contemporary Singapore perspective to its heritage, from bespoke textiles to porcelain ware.
